Absolute risk is the chance of something happening, written as a count out of a total: 3 in 100, or 4 in 10,000. Relative risk is the comparison between two of those chances, reported as a percentage or a multiple, such as double the risk. Doubling reads the same whether a risk goes from 3 in 100 to 6 in 100 or from 4 in 10,000 to 8 in 10,000. Only the counts separate those two cases. A relative figure never tells you how big a risk is, so ask for the counts it came from.

You are now holding 2 in 292,201,338. Flawless maths, zero new hope. That is the whole business: a percentage describes the move, a count describes where you landed. It runs the other way too, and this direction is quieter. A 4% bump sounds trivial, but on a thing that already reaches 25 people in 100 it moves 25 to 26, and that one extra person in a hundred is the real number behind the 4%. A huge percentage can mean nothing. A small one can mean plenty. Get both counts and most of the drama quietly deflates. 😎
