Most people already use it all day: web email, photo backups, and streaming all run in provider data centers, and most companies build their apps on rented machines the same way. Renting won for two reasons. First, you can change your order in minutes. A shop that needs one server in March and two hundred for a holiday sale rents the extra machines for a week and hands them back. Owning would mean buying for the busiest day and idling the rest of the year. Second, the provider does the unglamorous work: replacing failed drives, patching systems, cooling the halls. The counterweight is that rent adds up. A company with a large, steady, predictable workload can find owning cheaper, and some that grew up in the cloud later move parts back onto their own machines. The boundary is worth knowing too. Software running purely on your own device is not cloud, and the internet itself is not either. The internet is the road; cloud computing is renting the buildings you reach by it.

Cloud computing did to computers what the power grid did to electricity. Early factories ran their own generators, with the fuel, the mechanics, and the breakdowns. The grid turned power into something you plug into: use more on a busy day, less on a quiet one, and pay by the meter while the utility keeps the plant running.
