A VPN, short for virtual private network, is a service that encrypts your internet traffic and routes it through the provider's server before it reaches the open web. Your local network and internet provider see only scrambled data heading to one address, and the sites you visit see the VPN's address instead of yours. What it really changes is who can watch: less for the network around you, more for the VPN company you picked.

A VPN is a service that carries your internet traffic through an encrypted connection to one of its servers, and out to the web from there. That reroute changes what every onlooker sees. The coffee shop Wi-Fi and your internet provider now see only scrambled data flowing to a single server, not which sites you visit. The sites you visit see the VPN server's address, so you can appear to be in another city or country. The VPN provider, meanwhile, sees what your internet provider used to see. A VPN moves your trust from one company to another; it does not remove the need for it. People pay for that move for concrete reasons: using unfamiliar Wi-Fi, keeping browsing habits away from their internet provider, or reaching services as if from elsewhere. Companies run the other kind. A workplace VPN uses the same encryption for a different job: it lets employees into internal systems from home and keeps company data unreadable in transit, as if the laptop were plugged in at the office. The limits matter as much as the benefits. A VPN does not make you anonymous, because logging into an account identifies you regardless of the address you arrive from, and it does not block viruses or scams. It narrows who can watch the road you took, and that is all.

A virtual private network is a technology that establishes an encrypted connection between a device and a remote server or network over public infrastructure, presenting the remote endpoint's network address in place of the device's own. Consumer implementations route traffic through a provider's servers to limit observation by local networks and internet service providers; enterprise implementations extend an organization's internal network to remote devices. A VPN conceals traffic contents and destinations from intermediaries along the encrypted path, but does not itself provide anonymity to services requiring authentication, nor protection against malware.
