Standard deviation is a measure of dispersion, computed as the square root of the mean squared deviation from the arithmetic mean, and expressed in the units of the underlying data. For approximately normal distributions, approximately 68%, 95%, and 99.7% of observations fall within one, two, and three standard deviations of the mean respectively. The statistic is sensitive to outliers.
